NITROPHYL® Compatibility Guide

NITROPHYL® material was originally developed for use in petroleum based liquids, so it's well suited for use in gasoline, liquid propane, jet fuels, and various oil based products. Most of the performance data we have is based on various fuel mixtures, but many of our customers have tested and approved NITROPHYL floats for use in a variety of liquids.

Based on some of our customers' experience, we can suggest NITROPHYL floats for use in some non-petroleum based liquids. In addition, with nitrile rubber being one of the base materials for NITROPHYL materials, you can use a nitrile compatibility chart as an initial screen to see if our material is compatible with a specific liquid. This yields the suggested compatibility chart for NITROPHYL materials (below).

A 24 or 48-hour soak test is usually sufficient to get general compatibility information. If the float does not gain significant weight or visually distort during that time, chances are the material will perform satisfactorily. Keep in mind weight gain can vary due to a part's configuration and to the density of the material used.

If you are designing a new level sensing device for use in aggressive liquids, we suggest using our high density material (18-20 pounds per cubic foot), 285 - 320 Kg/m3.

It is important for customers to perform their own testing and approval of our floats in their specific liquids. Each application is different in the amount of weight gain and volume gain that is acceptable for that particular unit.

Rogers can also provide some guidance for setting up test procedures and putting together product specifications.
